Trisagion Service

A Ministry To Assist Those Who Are Suffering From Grief

The Trisagion Service is a brief and prayerful service of the Greek Orthodox Church offered for the repose of a loved one who has fallen asleep in the Lord. At Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Long Beach, our Trisagion Ministry is here to support families with care, compassion, and guidance during a difficult time.

When a death occurs, the Church surrounds the family with prayer. The Trisagion is one of the first services offered, asking God to grant rest, forgiveness, mercy, and eternal memory to the departed. It is a sacred moment of comfort for family and friends as they begin the process of mourning and remembrance.

What Is the Trisagion Service?

The word “Trisagion” means “Thrice-Holy,” referring to the repeated prayer, “Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.” In Orthodox Christian practice, the Trisagion Service is a short memorial prayer service offered by the priest on behalf of the departed. It is often held at the funeral home, in the church, at the wake, or at the graveside.

The service is usually brief, but its meaning is profound. Through these prayers, the Church asks Christ to give rest to the soul of His servant “where there is neither pain, sorrow, nor suffering, but life everlasting.” The Trisagion reminds us that even in grief, we place our hope in the mercy of God and the promise of the Resurrection.

When Is the Trisagion Offered?

At Assumption Long Beach, the Trisagion Service is commonly held the evening before the funeral service, often at 7:00 p.m. or 7:30 p.m., depending on family arrangements and clergy availability. It may also be offered at the graveside following the funeral.

Because every family’s circumstances are different, our parish will work with you to help determine the most appropriate time and location. Our goal is to make this process as clear and supportive as possible while honoring the traditions of the Orthodox faith.

How the Trisagion Ministry Helps Families

During a time of loss, practical details can feel overwhelming. Our Trisagion Ministry assists families by helping coordinate the service with the church office and clergy, answering questions about timing and traditions, and offering compassionate support as funeral arrangements are made.

We understand that each family’s needs are unique. Whether you are planning a Trisagion for a loved one, seeking guidance about Orthodox funeral customs, or simply looking for someone to help you understand the next steps, we are here to help.

Orthodox Christian Comfort in a Time of Grief

The Trisagion Service is not only a tradition. It is an expression of the Church’s love, prayer, and hope. In moments of grief, Orthodox Christians do not mourn alone. The parish community stands with the family, praying for the departed and asking God to grant peace, mercy, and rest.

As the Church prays for the soul of the faithful departed, we also pray for those who remain behind, that the Lord may strengthen them, comfort them, and uphold them with His grace.
