Altar Boys – Ages 8 and Up
A Tradition Where Young Men Become Part of the Process of the Divine Liturgy
A Sacred Ministry for Boys Ages 8 and Up
Altar Servers at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Long Beach have the blessing of assisting the clergy during the Divine Liturgy and other sacred services. This ministry gives young men a meaningful way to participate more closely in the worship life of the Church while learning reverence, discipline, responsibility, and service.
Serving in the altar is both an honor and a commitment. Through this ministry, boys grow in their understanding of the Divine Services, strengthen their Orthodox faith, and learn how to serve with attention, humility, and respect in the house of God.
What Is an Altar Server?
An altar server, also called an acolyte or altar boy, assists the priest during the services of the Church. In the Orthodox tradition, altar servers help support the orderly and prayerful flow of worship and learn firsthand about the beauty, meaning, and sacred rhythm of the Divine Liturgy.
For many boys, altar serving becomes one of the most meaningful ways to connect with church life. It helps them feel involved, needed, and spiritually grounded as they grow in faith and maturity.
Who Can Serve
At Assumption Long Beach, altar servers may be boys age 8 and up who meet the following general guidelines:
- Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christian boys in good standing with the Church
- Able to stand attentively, follow direction, and serve respectfully during the services
- Willing to learn the responsibilities of altar service and participate faithfully
- Encouraged to attend altar server meetings, instruction, and retreats when offered
What Boys Learn Through This Ministry
Altar Servers learn far more than where to stand or when to move. They begin to understand the structure of Orthodox worship, the meaning of reverence, and the importance of offering their best to God. Boys who serve regularly often develop:
- A deeper familiarity with the Divine Liturgy and feast day services
- Greater attentiveness, focus, and respect during worship
- A stronger connection to the clergy and parish life
- A sense of brotherhood and shared responsibility with other servers
- Confidence in serving the Church with humility and care
Why Altar Serving Matters
Altar serving is a beautiful way for young men to grow spiritually while actively participating in the life of the Church. It teaches that worship is not something we only watch, but something we enter into with our whole heart, mind, and body.
This ministry also helps boys build habits of reverence and responsibility that can stay with them for life. For many families, it becomes an important part of raising children in the Orthodox faith.
For Parents and Families
Parents play an important role in encouraging boys to serve consistently and prepare prayerfully. Arriving on time, dressing appropriately, listening carefully, and approaching the altar with seriousness and reverence all help young servers grow into the ministry.
