History of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Long Beach

Orthodoxy in Southern California: The Ministry Comes to Long Beach In 1937

The Assumption Greek Orthodox Church Long Beach history is a powerful story of faith, perseverance, and community. From its humble beginnings in the 1930s to becoming a vibrant parish today, the journey reflects generations of Orthodox Christians committed to building a spiritual home centered on worship, education, and fellowship.

Before the establishment of a local parish, Greek Orthodox Christians in Long Beach received services through the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America via Annunciation Church in Los Angeles. Visiting priests would travel periodically to serve sacraments for the growing community.

Early Beginnings of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church Long Beach History

In 1933, local Greek families recognized the need for a permanent Orthodox presence. This led to the creation of a Hellenic school, ensuring that future generations would retain both their faith and cultural identity.

On October 4, 1937, the community was officially granted a charter, marking a defining moment in the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church Long Beach history. The first leadership team included:

  • President: Theofanis Athanasiou
  • Vice President: George Manos
  • Secretary: Peter George
  • Treasurer: John Foutris

Building the Church and Growing the Community

The vision for a permanent church quickly gained momentum. In 1939, land was purchased in Long Beach, and by 1947 construction had begun.

The official opening took place on August 15, 1949, a milestone moment in the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church Long Beach history. This marked the establishment of a permanent spiritual home for Orthodox Christians in the area.

During this time, key ministries were also formed:

  • Greek School (established 1937)
  • Sunday School (held in homes before church completion)
  • Church Choir (organized 1947)
  • Philoptochos Society (established 1937)

Expanding Ministries and Community Life

As the parish grew, so did its programs. Folk dance groups began in 1980 and expanded into multiple age groups, becoming a vibrant part of parish life.

The Assumption Greek Orthodox Church Long Beach history continued to evolve through anniversaries and milestones, including:

  • 1999: 50th anniversary of the church building
  • 2012: 75th anniversary of the parish community

Historical records preserved through decades of transitions—including church relocations—help document the rich legacy of the parish.
