- Επιτάφιος. Lamentations Service 7:00 pm
On Good Friday evening the burial, one of the most impressive and elaborate services of the Orthodox Church takes place. The priest, altar boys, choir and the faithful, as the myrrh‐bearers, gather around the Tomb (Kouvouklion) of Christ, and sing the lamentation hymns. These are a collection of doleful chants bemoaning Christ’s Passion. It is called “the Epitaphios Lament” and describes Christ’s death, the emotions of His sorrowing mother and the occasion of the Lord’s decent into Hades, through which humanity was recalled from corruption and permitted to continue on into everlasting life. At the conclusion of the hymns a procession with the Epitaphion solemnizing the decent of Jesus into Hades begins. The Service is completed by the reading of the prophesy in which the Resurrection is heralded.
